Off-Season Storage

Language: 日本語

How do you store your snowboards and skis in off-season?Snowboards Skis go longer when they’re not in use! That is why storage is so important.

If leave them unattended…

This is what happens when you store your snowboard for a long time without doing anything to it. The base surface has deteriorated due to friction and oxidation. It has a scabrous appearance! The wax has been removed and the surface is rough and crusty. It can be clearly seen visually. It looks like it won’t slide…

Deterioration and scuffing of the base surface create significant resistance to the snow surface.

The flaky areas on the base of the snowboard will catch on the snow surface, making it difficult to slide on the snow. Wax will not penetrate the deteriorated areas, and the longer the board is left as it is, the worse it will slide. To some extent, this can be fixed with hot wax.

Dirt on the base surface also causes deterioration.

The end of the season is a time when there is a lot of dirt on snow surfaces. Yellow sand, pollen, lift lubricant, etc. Petroleum-based dirt is particularly damaging to the base surface. When moisture and dirt combine and soak into the surface, they cause a chemical reaction that results in deterioration of the surface. This not only reduces the sliding ability of the base, but also makes the base itself more brittle. Cleaning wax or, in some cases, using a special remover is one way to prevent this. Clean them before storing them!

Benefits of waxing and storage

Prevents deterioration due to exposure to air

Although there is no immediate deterioration, UV rays, moisture, dirt, and other factors can cause gradual degradation, leading to oxidation and scuffing. By coating the base surface with wax (like a lid), it is kept from direct contact with moisture, oxygen in the air, and other substances that can cause deterioration. In addition, the higher the temperature, the more rapidly the deterioration progresses, so it is even more important during the off-season, when the temperature is higher, to prevent direct contact between the base surface and the air. This is also an effective storage method in Japan’s humid climate. The same is true for boards that have just been purchased; direct contact with the air and humidity will accelerate deterioration.

You can check the condition of your board while you wax it!

Checking for small scratches or signs of damage that you normally wouldn’t notice can help prevent injuries and accidents. And, you’ll have a smooth start to the season! It is also a good idea to remove rust from the edges and apply a rust inhibitor.

If possible, remove the bindings. If the binding screws are tightened for a long time, the surface of the board will be pulled and deformed. If you don’t want to remove the binding screws, just loosen them a little.

Go straight to season!

You can remove the excess wax and you are ready to go snowboarding skiing anytime. Sometimes more waxing is needed, but basically you can go snowboarding skiing without the extra wax! Preparation is necessary before the season anyway. The longer you leave it, the harder it is to get ready! If you think you can do that work at the end of the season, there is an even bigger benefit.

summary

Off-season storage conditions can greatly affect the life of your board! At the very least, keep it clean. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from high temperatures and humidity! If you are not confident about doing it yourself, or if the board is in too bad a condition, you can take it to a store for a tune-up! The price ranges from 8,000 yen to 15,000 yen, which includes tuning of the base, edge adjustment, and wax for storage. Store them properly for the next winter!

If you want to wax it yourself!

Many wax companies sell a complete set of tools necessary for hot waxing. It costs about 10,000 yen, including an instruction manual on how to wax. That may not be that much more than it costs to get a tune-up! Recommended for those who want to wax by themselves in the future.
